Meet the partners: LetSea AS

Research facilities of LetSea AS.

R&D land has 72 tanks for running controlled experiments in both RAS and FTS.

R&D Sea has 120 small-scale sea cages for running controlled experiments in natural surroundings.

Open water sites have 35 commercial sea cages.

How the work developed at LetSea impacts the environment?

LetSea is Norway's largest experimental and research centre for aquaculture. We are located in Helgeland (a southerly district in Northern Norway located south of the Arctic Circle). We work with applied research through self-financing and on assignments from breeding companies, research institutions, the feed industry, raw material suppliers, equipment suppliers, and other companies linked to the aquaculture industry.

Our goal is to be an important player in increasing productivity, competence, and sustainability in the Norwegian farming industry by implementing the best results from the research sector. Innovation has been a prerequisite and a central driving force in LetSea since the company was established. Using research and innovation, we develop innovative and sustainable solutions so that the company can contribute to all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

What is LetSea’s primary responsibility in the project OPTIRAS?

LetSea is an industry project partner in OPTIRAS. We will run the experiment at our land facility, where we will test the impact of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on Atlantic salmon smolts. We will also test innovative water treatment strategies in a recirculatory aquaculture system.

What does LetSea expect to achieve within the deliverables of the project?

We expect to find solutions/prevention strategies to H2S accidents that sometimes can happen in a commercial RAS system leading to significant economic loss to the farmer. In addition to this, we will also investigate how chronic exposure to h2s in combination with water treatment affects fish health.
